I’m watching “Heroes” with the girls (not quite Ruth’s thing). There is probably not another TV show at present which mentions God as much. Until recently there was a voice over introduction and conclusion to each episode which asked profound questions about who we are as humans – and often in relation to God and the gifts (superhuman or otherwise) that he has given to us. The title of the original, but unaired, pilot was “In His Own Image”.
Last week’s eposide was pretty amazing. Peter Petrelli and his mother, Angela, (a schemer and manipulator) are hiding out in a catholic church. Government agents are after them. As they talk they reflect on their past. As Angela sits in a pew Peter asks if she wants forgiveness from God and in reply Angela says that she doubts even he would forgive her.
Then there is a scene in which Peter prays to a figure of Jesus.
I asked to be extraordinary and I promised to make the world a better place. So, when I got my chance I lived up to my end of the bargain. For what? I’m running for my life. A lot of people are running for their lives. They’re hurt, and they’re dying, and I can’t help them. Do you even care what you put people through? I mean, I kneel here before you to ask for help. Do you even listen? And I’m tired of fighting. And I’m angry. I’m angry at my father… my brother… my mother… at you. We had a deal. I think it’s about time you lived up to your end. Please…. just…. show up.
At that point government agent come into the church looking for Peter and his mother. It appears that Peter’s prayers have failed – that God has not shown up.
But then they hide in a confessional with Peter taking the (physical) place of the priest, and there Angela confesses the “sins” of the past – lies, manipulation and betrayal - which in turn has cost her everything. It is in the place of confession that both are “saved” as one of the agents opens the confessional door, sees them, but decides (for reasons too complicated to explain here) not to say anything.
Anyways, confession leading to salvation. Interesting stuff.
